BREAKING: Majocha relieved of duties as Senior Vice Chancellor, Shaffer named interim

The University of Nebraska at Kearney will be searching for a new Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, as Dr. Kristin Majocha was relieved of her duties today by UNK Chancellor Doug Kristensen.

In an email to faculty and staff, Chancellor Kristensen thanked Majocha for her energy, time, and expertise she provided to UNK over the past year.

Majocha was selected as SVCAA in April 2022, and started in July 2022. Before her appointment at UNK, she was dean for the College of Social Sciences and Human Services and College of Education and Liberal Arts at California University of Pennsylvania. She succeeded longtime SVCAA Dr. Charlie Bicak.

Longtime Biology Professor Dr. Julie Shaffer has been appointed interim SVCAA for the next year. Shaffer has been at UNK for over 20 years and has been the chair of the Biology Department for five years. In the email from Kristensen, the interim position will be for one year, or until the university is able to conduct a national search and hire a permanent Senior Vice Chancellor.

The senior vice chancellor for academic affairs is the chief academic officer at UNK, overseeing three academic colleges, general studies and Graduate Studies and Academic Outreach, including UNK Online. The position also oversees the library, Academic Resources and Institutional Research, assessment, Sponsored Programs and Research, International Education, registrar and academic programs such as undergraduate research, honors and Thompson Scholars Learning Community.
