UNK Cross Country: #9 and #19 Lopers Run Tomorrow at NCAA Championships

Kearney, Neb. – The nationally-ranked Nebraska Kearney cross country teams are in Washington Friday afternoon for the 2022 NCAA Division II Championships. This is a "Fall Festival" year with Seattle Pacific University hosting NCAA D2 Championships in cross, women's volleyball, men's and women's soccer and women's field hockey. Cross country takes place in University Place, Wash., (40 miles Southwest of Seattle) at Chambers Creek Regional Park. ​ The 19th-ranked Loper women, in the NCAA's for the first-time in program history, run a 6k at 1:15 p.m. central with the 9th-ranked men starting things with a 10k at noon Central. A free live video feed is available as are live results. Chambers Park is located right on Carr Inlet with temperatures expected to be in the high 20's/low 30's at race time with a rain, ice and snow mix a possibility. The field consists of 68 teams (34 men's and 34 women's) with 48 individuals (24 women and 24 men) not on one of those qualifying teams also running. Last year, the Loper men finished 25th out of 34 in a meet held in humid St. Leo, Fla. UNK had five top eight finishes at this meet between 1990-95. The Loper women's last national appearance as a team came back in 1987 in Kenosha, Wisc. Then-Kearney State College tallied 446 points to finish 17th in a field of 34. Hall of Famer Paula (West) Mayfield led the way with a 20th place finish. The 1980 and 1981 Lopers both cracked the Top 10 at nationals. The indoor track & field season starts Friday as well as the annual Blue/Gold Intrasquad begins at 3 p.m. in Cushing Coliseum.
