UNK Golf: "B" Team Has Record Setting Score to Place 2nd in Lincoln

King Ties 54-Hole Record

Kearney, Neb. – Sophomore Brooke King earned medalist honors to help the Nebraska-Kearney “B” team place second at the Concordia Bulldog Spring Invitational Tuesday in Lincoln.

The rare 54-hole tournament was held at the par 72 Highlands (5,837 yards) Golf Course. The 11-team field played 36 holes on Monday and another 18 today.

Overall, scores improved with each round with UNK managing efforts of 324, 316 and 296 (936 overall) to trail only Iowa Western C.C. (928; 310-323-295). The Reivers are ranked 11th in the junior college ranks.

The 296 is the fifth lowest 18-hole score for a Loper team with the 936 ranking fourth-best for 54 holes. Next, King tied the 54-hole school-record of 224 (76-76-72). Current super senior Faviola Gonzalez tallied the same score at last fall’s Golfweek D2 Invite in Florida. King reached her 8-over tally by sinking a tourney-best nine birdies, carding one of six Eagles and having 27 pars. Madi Schlaepfer and Baylie Pike of IWCC tied for second (229).

UNK’s four other scorers all placed in the top 15. Kansas freshman Beth Grant (T-7th/234; 82-80-72) joined King with an even par 72 on Tuesday, Colombia redshirt freshman Sofia Laserna (9th; 82-77-76) now has had three sub-80 rounds this spring, Bayard junior Avery Mitchell (13th/243; 84-83-76) had six birdies and Arizona junior Sophia Coleman (T-15th/249; 84-83-82) recorded 23 pars.

Several of these Lopers will join the varsity and head to the Virginia Lass Memorial Invitational early next week in Joplin, Mo.
