Gonzalez Now With a School-Record 90 Career Rounds Played
Kearney, Neb. – The 58th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney women's golf team shot a 54-hole total of 966 to place fourth at the 2023 MIAA Championships Wednesday in Joplin, Mo. The 11-team field played the par 72 (5,800 yards) Eagle Creek Golf Club. The Lopers recorded a 978 on the same course earlier this month but that layout was 6,066 yards and the weather more extreme. Overall, the average team score was a 332 (82.86 individual) this week. UNK had rounds of 332, 315 and 319 to trail only 22nd-ranked Central Missouri (936), 43-ranked Rogers State (939) and Northeastern State (959). This marks the Lopers third top four finish in this event, following 2022 (first) and 2015 (fourth). Puerto Rico senior Faviola Gonzalez set a new school-record by just completing today's round. It marked her 90th as a Loper, surpassing the previous Loper standard of 89 (Samantha Crawford, 2015-18). She had another strong showing, tying for 15th place (239; 80-77-82), thanks to four birdies and 27 pars. Northwest Missouri's Paige Hoffman earned medalist honors with an 8-over par 224 (73-74-744). She was a stroke ahead of UCM's Nicole Rallo. Kansas junior Allison Comer, thanks to a 4-over 76 on Wednesday, also tied for 15th place (83-80). Her third round featured one birdie and seven pars on the back nine. Next, Colombian sophomore Juliana Botero Molina finished in 18th place (240; 84-77-79). She carded five birdies over the final two days and had five straight pars on Tuesday. Finally, Arizona senior Paige Lucero tied for 29th (248; 85-81-82) with Kansas sophomore Brooke King coming in 35th place (254; 85-87-82). Lucero now ranks ninth in school-history in career rounds (70) with King having three birdies this week. UNK is in good shape to make NCAA Regionals, the first phase of the NCAA Championships, when the field is announced on Monday, May 1st. The Lopers were ranked sixth in the region last week with nine bids up for grabs.
