UNK Golf: Lopers Tie for 3rd in Final Regular Season Tourney

MIAA’s Next Week at Missouri Southern

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's golf team shot the seventh lowest 36-hole score (611) in school-history to tie for third place at the annual Wildcat Classic Tuesday in Wayne. The 10-team field played the par 72 (5,918 yards) Wayne C.C. A shotgun start began the tournament on Monday morning. UNK got off to a bit of a slow start again but worked its way up the leaderboard thanks to 18-hole totals of 312 and 299. The day two tally is the 11th sub-300 round in school-history with the final score the third time this academic year UNK has shot under 612. No. 38 Augustana (607; 298-309) held off Minnesota State (608; 301-307) to win with the host Wildcats also shooting a 611 (307-3-04) on its home course. Coming in eighth place was a Loper "B" team (652; 328-324). That foursome bested varsity squads from Mary and Bemidji State. Puerto Rico super Faviola Gonzalez finished fourth with a 4-over par 148 (74-74) to lead UNK. This marks her seventh career sub-150 score and the third and fourth times, respectively, with a 74. Her tourney featured a tourney-high seven birdies and being 4-under on par 5 holes. Anna Cihak of MSU was the medalist (1-under 143) with two golfers at a 3-over 147. Also cracking the top 15 was Colombian sophomore Juliana Botero Molina (T-9th; 152/82-70), Kansas junior Allison Comer (T-11th; 153/78-75) and Colombian redshirt freshman Sofia Laserna Murra (T-15th; 155/80-75). Laserna Murra paced the "B" team with Botero Molina carding a 70 for the third time in her career. She had one of three Eagles in the tourney, a three on the par 5 13th hole (458 yards) on Monday. Finally, Comer had three birdies on Tuesday. Also for the Lopers, Kansas freshman Beth Grant and Kansas sophomore Brooke King both tied for 28th with identical scores (159; 78-81), Arizona senior Paige Lucero was 34th (162; 82-80), Bayard junior Avery Mitchell tied for 39th (166; 82-84) with Arizona junior Sophia Coleman 10 spots back (172; 88-84). The 2023 MIAA Championships begins Monday at Eagle Creek G.C. in Joplin, Mo.
