UNK Golf: Teams Battle Weather at UCM

Loper “B” Team Beats Several Varsity Squads

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney women's golf team shot a 36-hole total of 662 to finish in fifth place at the annual Midwest Intercollegiate Tuesday in Warrensburg, Mo. The 14-team event also featured a Loper "B" team and was held at the par 70 Mules National Golf Club (5,667 yards). Conditions were less than ideal as tee times were pushed back on both days due to weather. The average round was an 87 on Monday and an 85.5 on Tuesday. UNK had efforts of 340 and 322 to move up a spot on Tuesday. The host and 26th-ranked Jennies (621) won with No. 32 Augustana (627) and Southwestern Oklahoma State (628) close behind. Drury (653) was ahead just ahead of the Lopers. The "B" team managed to beat varsity squads from Lincoln, Quincy (Ill.), William Jewell (Mo.) Upper and Iowa and NAIA-member William Woods (Mo.). They finished in ninth place (685; 351-334) and moved up two spots on day two. Kansas junior Allison Comer (T-18th/162; 80-82) and Colombian redshirt freshman Sofia Laserna Murra (20th; 162; 84-79) were the low Lopers. Comer recorded 18 pars with Laserna, who was on the "B" team, had two birdies. Augie's Molly Stevens was the medalist (153) as she won a playoff with UCM's Hayley Jones. Also for the Lopers, Puerto Rico senior Faviola Gonzalez (88-76) and Colombian sophomore Juliana Botero Molina (85-79) both shot a 164 to tie for 21st place. Molina had three birdies, as did Kansas freshman Beth Grant, with Gonzalez at 17 pars. Finally, Arizona junior Sophia Coleman was the second low Loper from the "B" squad, carding a 169 (T-34th/86-83). UNK is now off until a trip to Joplin, Mo., on April 10-11. A "B" team will take part in a Concordia Invite in Lincoln on April 3-4.
