UNK Softball: Lopers Can't Catch the Huskies & Golden Eagles

Another Tourney Trip Next Weekend

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney softball team fell behind early on and lost to both St. Cloud State, 9-4, Minnesota-Crookston, 10-4, Sunday afternoon in Topeka, Kan. This was the third and final day of the Washburn Invite. The Lopers (7-11) tour of the Midwest continues next weekend with a tourney in Springfield, Mo. In the late game, the Golden Eagles (4-7) had just seven hits but three were home runs. UMC had a two-out, two-run shot in both the first and sixth innings and well as two-out shot in the fifth. The dingers came from the cleanup, five and six-hole hitters. UNK did get a two-run shot from Kearney super senior third baseman Avery Wood (2 for 3, two runs) in the fourth. Colorado lefty Madison Rosenthal went the distance for the Lopers first complete game of the spring with UMC getting hits from six different players. The Huskies (4-3) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the early game and never looked back. The big first inning featured two walks, two singles, double, hit batter and Loper error. The Lopers scored twice in the fifth and seventh innings with Lincoln junior leadoff hitter Carly Dembowski having two RBI's and California sophomore Sydney Thomason recording a hit and RBI from the two-hole. Finally, Elkhorn sophomore outfielder Jaycee Schutte went 1 for 3 with an RBI. SCSU was paced by third baseman Maggie Fitzgerald (4 for 4, one run & three RBI's) and Trinity Junker (6.0 IP, two earned runs, seven K's). UNK faces Crookston again to start the Drury Invite on Friday.
