UNK Softball: Lopers Split with Griffs; Big Weekend for Thomason

UNK Has Final Non-Con Tourney this Weekend

Kearney, Neb. – Senior catcher Katie Gosker hit a walk-off single down the left field line and sophomore Sydney Thomason had another big day as Nebraska Kearney beat Missouri Western State, 2-1, in the first game of a double header Monday afternoon at Patriot Park. The Lopers (12-14, 3-1) dropped the night cap as the Griffons (12-5, 2-2) scored four unearned in the top of the first and hung on for a 4-2 win. These games were originally set for Saturday but pushed back two days due to weather and field conditions. In the early contest, Thomason (Ripon, Calif.) tossed a complete-game five-hitter, fanning six and walk just one. Throwing 111 pitches, she shut out Mo West over the first four innings, recorded 12 ground outs and didn't allow an earned run. She helped her own cause in the third with a deep shot over the left center fence. That is her team-leading seven dinger of the spring; including the night cap Thomason batted .563 (9 for 16) this weekend with three HR's and six RBI's. The Griffs tied things up in the fifth thanks to an infield single, error, sac but, hit batter and two-out RBI single to center. In the Loper seventh, Lincoln sophomore Lyndsey Roth hit a one-out single to left with Kearney freshman Anna Reiling replacing her as a pinch runner. Thomason (2 for 4) followed with an infield single and then a wild pitch moved both her and Reiling over. Finally, Gosker (2 for 4) fouled off four pitches to work things to a full count before smacking the ball down the line.

Listen to the game here. Freshman Harley Pruetting (5-1) threw 4.2 innings of scoreless relief to lead the Griffs in game two. Leadoff hitter and second baseman Sydni Hawkins went 2 for 4 with junior first baseman Taylor Bristol having a two-out, two-run single in the first. Roth (2 for 2, one run) and Thomason had RBI's for the Lopers in the third but the Blue & Gold stranded seven, as did the Griffs. Finally, Colorado junior lefty Madison Rosenthal struck out 10 in five full innings of relief. UNK heads to St. Joseph this weekend for the Mo West Invite; weather will likely change the schedule.
