UNK Softball: Lopers Start 2023 in Lubbock

UNK Faces 21st-Ranked Chaps on Saturday; First of Five Games with Mountain Lions

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney softball team begins the 2023 season with four games this weekend at annual Lubbock (Texas) Sports College Classic. The Lopers face Colorado-Colorado Springs (11 a.m.) and Eastern New Mexico (3 p.m.) on Friday and Southwestern Oklahoma State (11 a.m.) and tourney host Lubbock Christian (3 p.m.) on Saturday. Last year in this tourney, UNK fell to both UCCS, 4-2, and LCU, 6-1, while beating both ENMU and SWOSU back in the spring of 2020. Head coach Katie Ackermann has a squad picked to finish eighth in the 14-team MIAA this year. The LCU Chaps are coming off a 39-12 season and ranked 21st nationally with UCCS (27-24), Eastern (18-30) and SWOSU (12-30) combining for 57 wins in 2022. The Lopers head to UCCS next weekend for a rare four-game non-conference series. UNK's vets include sophomore pitcher/infielder Sydney Thomason (.337, 6 HR's, 41 RBI's; two wins & a save), Blair senior catcher Katie Gosker (.289, 13 HR's, 35 RBI's), Omaha junior outfielder Abbie Jo Gaube (.286, 10 doubles, 22 RBI's), Colorado junior lefty Madison Rosenthal (seven wins, 33 appearances) and Colorado junior right hander Stacy Bott (seven wins, 31 appearances). The year begins with 22 road/neutral site games with the home opener set for March 10-11 at Patriot Park vs. Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri.
