Article by: Peter Yazvac: Assistant Athletic Director

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney women’s golf team shot a school-record 54-hole score of 919 to place sixth at the Golfweek Division II Invitational Tuesday in Destin, Fla.

The 10-team, three-day event was held at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort and the par 71 Raven Golf Club (5,827 yards).

The top-notch field included four Florida schools, Montevallo (Ala.), Texas A&M-Kingsville, Central Region members Harding (Ark.) and Rogers State and William Jewell (Mo.).

UNK improved each day, carding a 313, 308 and 298. The 919 bests a pair of 933’s (2019 MIAA Championships and 2019 Hardscrabble Invite) with the 298 on Tuesday one of only eight sub-300 rounds in school history.

Three Florida schools led the way in Nova Southeastern (871), Flagler (872) and West Florida (892). UNK came in ahead of Harding, Kingsville, William Jewell and the Palm Beach Atlantic (Fla.) Sailfish.

Puerto Rico super senior Faviola Gonzalez finished 13th with an 11-over par 224 (76-75-73). That is a new 54-hole school-record, topping the 227 Maaika Mestl managed at the ’19 Hardscrabble. Gonzalez’s tourney featured 35 pars and she was even on par 5 holes.

Emma Larsen of Nova Southeastern was the medalist (1-under par 212) with two others three strokes back. The average score improved each day and was a 77.91 overall.

UNK’s next three scorers were separated by just three strokes in Colombian sophomore Juliana Botero Molina (T-22nd; 231/79-78-74), Kansas junior Allison Comer (T-27th; 233/81-79-73) and Arizona senior Paige Lucero (T-29th; 234/77-79-78). Botero Molina had a team-best eight birdies and one of two eagles in the tourney, Comer tallied 31 pars with Lucero at a 4.41 on par 4 holes. Finally, Kansas sophomore Brooke King averaged a 3.20 on par 3 holes and tied for 33rd place (237; 82-76-79).

The Lopers head to Larchwood, Ia., this weekend for the Augustana Fall Regional Preview.
