Lopers Vs. Broncos Sunday Morning
Kearney, Neb. - The Nebraska Kearney tennis team won four singles matches to down Midwestern (Texas) State, 4-2, Friday night at the Ernest Grundy Tennis Center. This was UNK's first-ever dual in the West Campus building that opened last summer. Not surprisingly, the Lopers will be at home throughout February with many other teams stopping by and playing neutral site matches. Both UNK (7-0) and MSU, from Wichita Falls, are receiving votes for the Top 25 and are among the top teams in their respective regions. Last year in Texas the Mustangs claimed a 4-3 win. The 'Stangs (0-1) started off on the right foot again as the second-ranked doubles pair in the South Central, Skyler Minns and Michaela McSpadden, won 7-5 at number three. That gave the doubles point to MSU as they had won at one after UNK took number two, 6-4. Sophomore Alexis Bernthal (Boulder, Colo.) and Merci Hood (Adams Central) almost rallied from a 3-0 hole at number three but McSpadden and Minns tallied the last three points to win. At number two, sophomore Narindra Ranaivo (Madagascar) and sophomore Masha Hatouka (Belarus) beat the South Central's seventh-ranked doubles tandem. UNK quickly moved ahead for good in singles as Hatouka (five), Ranavio (three) and Bernthal (four) each won in straight sets. The 'Stangs had won at six but then junior Melisa Becerra (Colombia) rallied from a 4-1 hole in the third to win at number one and clinch the dual. The Lopers are off Saturday before hosting Hastings College Sunday at 8 a.m.
