Ferguson Continues to Dominate the 800
Kearney, Neb. – Redshirt sophomore Wes Ferguson broke his own school-record at 800-meters to lead Nebraska Kearney track and field this weekend in the Lincoln area. The Lopers were in Seward on Friday for the annual Concordia Classic and then spent two days at the Devaney Center for the annual Frank Sevigne/Husker Invitational. Ferguson (Fremont), the defending indoor and outdoor 800 NCAA Division II national champ, won his event on Saturday at UNL by turning in a 1:49.04. That bests the 1:49.47 he ran at last year's MIAA Championships and ranks second nationally behind CSU-Pueblo's Reece Newell-Shaman (1:48.17). Ferguson also was the second leg for a 4x4 relay team that turned in the fifth best time in school history (3:17.67). Also at UNL, Fremont freshman Tyson Baker was sixth in the 600 with the fourth fastest time (1:20.89) in UNK history with St. Paul freshman Connor Wells three spots back in ninth (1:21.30). That time is sixth on the all-time list. Finally at UNL, Ravenna redshirt sophomore Jack Drahota had a career-best 8.18 in the 60-hurdles to come in fifth. The Loper women saw Gothenburg junior Hannah Anderson run the ninth best time in school history in the 800 (2:16.78) with Aurora redshirt sophomore Kayla Carlson turning in the eight best time in the 600 (1:37.95). A day earlier at Concordia, Creighton redshirt sophomore Alex Homan went a career-best 16-0.75 to win the vault. That ties him for sixth in school history and ranks him in the top 15 nationally. On the women's side, David City redshirt sophomore Gabrielle Oborony remained consistent by clearing 12-0.50, just off her career best of 12-0.75. She finished fourth overall. Next, Kearney redshirt freshman, Lily Novacek (Kearney) won the weight throw with a season-best 58-7.25. That moves her up to fourth in Loper lore and into the D2 top 20. Finally, Giltner redshirt junior Alex Goracke was a double winner (shot; 52-2 – weight throw; 61-0.75) with Juniata resdshirt senior Justin Vrooman (3,000/8:37.83) and Surprise redshirt junior Allie Frasher (mile/5:28.80) coming in first as well. UNK heads to Topeka and Pittsburg next weekend.
