UNK Track: Lopers Get Winter Off to a Good Start in Cushing

Seven National Marks to Start 2022-23

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney track and field team won 17 events and had seven national marks at the annual UNK Pre-Holiday Classic Friday night in Cushing Coliseum. This was the Lopers first regular season meet of the 2022-23 indoor season. Also in attendance was NAIA members Hastings, York and Bethany (Kan.). On the women's side, Kearney natives Haley Schall and Lily Novacek had big nights as Schall won the long jump (career-best 18-10) and 60-meter dash (career-best 7.80) with Novacek runner up (career-best 57-0) in the weight throw. Schall moves up a spot to fourth on the all-time 60 list with her big leap being a provisional mark and ranking sixth in school history. Next, Novacek is a provisional qualifier for the first time with her big toss also ranking fifth in Loper lore. Not surprisingly, two-time 800-meter national champion Wes Ferguson (Fremont) got his track season off to a good start by winning the 800 in 1:50.85. That is just off his own school mark (1:49.47) with the track conversion (1:48.45) ranking him first in D2 at the moment. Fellow All-American Brayden Sorensen (Kearney) took the high jump with a big leap of 6-9.75. That places him on the national list and isn't too far off his school-record (7-0.50). Next, Giltner junior Alex Goracke won both the weight throw (60-5.25) and shot (51-3.75). The weight throw effort puts him on the national list. The other Lopers to get on the national list were Elkhorn sophomore Trevor Bills in the high jump (2nd/6-7.75) and Hershey senior Kyler Banks in the pole vault (1st/15-7). Back on the women's side, Kearney sophomore Nicole Messbarger won the 400 with the 10th fastest time (58.47) in school history, Gothenburg junior Hannah Anderson led the way in the 800 (2:19.98), York freshman Brynn Hirschfeld won the mile (5:26.22), Stamford freshman Brianna Russell and Kansas sophomore Brooklyn Staab tied for the high jump lead (5-3), Kearney junior Courtney Thee was one of three Lopers to go 10-7 in the vault and Taylor sophomore Jordan Dockweiler won the shot (42-9). Finally, the other UNK men to take gold were Wallace junior Micah Swedberg at 600 yards (1:14.68), Ravenna sophomore Jack Drahota in the 60 hurdles (8.45) and Gretna freshman Clayton Kelly in both the long (21-5.25) and triple (43-3.50) jumps. UNK is now off until the annual Graduate Classic January 13-14 in Lincoln.
