UNK Track (Sat.): Lopers Compete in Kansas and Texas

UNK Wins the Javelin, Men’s High Jump and Women’s Hammer

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney track and field team won four events at the K.T. Woodman and Jo Meaker Classics this weekend in Kansas and Texas. Both meets had large fields with the Woodman hosted by Wichita State Friday and Saturday and the Meaker in Canyon and hosted by West Texas A&M. That meet began on Thursday. At WT, UNK won both javelin competitions as Kansas freshman Rylan Basart had a career-best effort of 206-11 with Kansas junior Jaida McEwen turning in a 137-9. Right behind them were teammates Evan Prohaska (2nd/198-8) and Hanna Stewart (3rd/125-3). Basart remains in third place on UNK all-time list with Stewart (Atlanta) moving into ninth.

Next, Kearney redshirt freshman Lily Novacek won the hammer with a career-best toss of 180-2. That ties her for fifth in Loper lore with three teammates also in the top five. Novacek then was third in the discus (135-5) on Saturday. In the men's hammer, Giltner junior Alex Goracke was third (191-10) with Kearney junior Nicole Messbarger fourth in the 400 (career-best 55.75) and 17th out of 45 the 200 (25.24). Finally, Aurora junior Kyla Carlson was third in the 400 hurdles with a time (1:03.07) that moves her into fifth place in school history. Up the road in Wichita, Kearney senior Brayden Sorensen went 6-11.75 to lead a field of 34 high jumpers. In the pole vault, Creighton junior Alex Homan was runner up (15-9) with David City redshirt sophomore Gabrielle Oborny (11-11.75) third. On the track Friday, Albion redshirt freshman Jordan Soto-Stopak ran a 17:38.56 to place fourth out of 55 in the 5,000-meter run. That is the fourth best time in UNK history. In the steeplechase, the Lopers had three in the top 11 lead by York freshman Brynn Hirschfeld (11:21.34). That time ranks sixth on the all-time list. Finally, Holdrege senior Trevor Matousek was eighth out of 80 in the 1,500 (career-best 3:52.39) and Fremont freshman Tyson Baker finished sixth out of 60 in the 800 (1:54.06). Matousek vaults into fifth place on the top 10 list thanks to that effort. UNK hosts the Loper Invitational at KHS next Saturday.
