UNK Track: Two Steeple Runners Up at MIAA's

UNK Sitting 8th after Day Two of Three

Kearney, Neb. – Ben Arens and Brynn Hirschfeld were runners up in the steeplechase and Wes Ferguson had the top time in the 800-prelims to lead Nebraska Kearney at the 2023 MIAA Outdoor Championships Saturday in Jefferson City, Mo. The three-day meet began Friday afternoon with the multi-events and will conclude Sunday evening. The Loper men are currently in eighth place (15.50 points) with the women also eighth (15.0 points). Arens (Ainsworth) ran an 9:02.23 to only trail Northwest Missouri's Reece Smith (8:55.19). Hirschfield (York) turned in a career-best 11:00.33 to record the fourth-best time in UNK history. Senior Caroline Cunningham of Northwest (10:28.69) won; that time ranks in the top 12 nationally. In the 800 prelims, Ferguson (Fremont) ran a 1:50.35 with Riley Gorham of Missouri Western well behind in second place (1:51.13). Also scoring team points on Saturday was Kearney redshirt freshman Lily Novacek (4th/hammer; 181-1), Creighton junior Alex Homan (5th/vault; 15-9.25), Giltner redshirt junior Alex Goracke (7th/hammer; 188-9), Aurora redshirt senior Kennedy Krejdl in the steeple (7th/11:56.00), Juniata redshirt senior Justin Vrooman in the 10,000 (8th/31:40.50) and Kansas freshman Rylan Basart (8th/javelin; 187-10). Finally, Ravenna junior Jack Drahota (7th/53.31) qualified for the 400-hurdle finals as did Gothenburg junior Hannah Anderson in the 800 (8th/2:14.47). Anderson's time also ranks eighth in school history.
