Kearney, Neb. – The No. 26/29 Nebraska Kearney women's basketball team handcuffed Rogers State, 76-37, Thursday night at Buckle Court. This was the MIAA opener for both with UNK (8-1) wining a seventh straight game and improving to 7-0 all-time against the Hillcats (2-5) from Claremore, Okla. The Lopers showed why they are the top-ranked defensive outfit in the MIAA as they limited RSU to six first quarter points and just three in the third. The 'Cats finished the night 14 of 46 from the field (30%) and with 25 turnovers. UNK tallied 18 points off those miscues and also was plus five on the glass. "Our team was really excited for each other and themselves in just how we played. It was a pretty complete game on both ends of the floor," said UNK head coach Carrie Eighmey. "We were really disruptive defensively. We got 25 turnovers and we don't press." This marks the fifth time the Lopers have held a MIAA foe under 40 points. The "record" is 34 in a January 2021 win vs. Missouri Western. UNK, trailing for just 24 seconds, shot almost 50% in the first half to grab leads of 17-6 and 33-16. A balanced attack featured eight different scorers and 14 different players taking the court. "Collectively as a group we executed well. We moved the ball well – we had 22 assists on 30 made shots," said Eighmey. "That's a pretty good number and execution of your offense." South Dakota junior guard Trinity Law has six points and hit a couple of layups off three steals. Next, Kansas super senior Elisa Backes scored 12 on the strength of two top of the key threes with Elkhorn senior post Brooke Carlson (12) making 6 of 9 shots coming off the bench. "Trinity really set the (defensive) tone in the first quarter. She had a ton of deflections and the rest of our team played good defense too," said Eighmey. Also for UNK, Missouri redshirt junior forward Lexi Moes (nine points) had another big fourth quarter with Iowa redshirt junior forward Shiloh McCool (13 points, eight rebounds) close to a double double thanks to a 7 of 7 effort at the line. Lefty guard Jordan Lewis (11) led RSU with top player Bailey Kliewer limited to a 2 of 11 shooting night. UNK hosts Northeastern State on Saturday. The RiverHawks (4-2) fell tonight at Fort Hays, 88-52.
