Weekend shootings prompt UNK response

Two weekend shootings near campus prompted Timely Alerts from UNK Police.

Kearney Police responded to the first shooting around 2:30 A.M. at 23rd & 7th Avenue. In that shooting, an adult male was transported to CHI-Good Samaritan with a stab wound to the leg.

Later that evening, around 9:45 P.M., Kearney Police responded to a report of gun shots fired in the 600 block of West 25th Street.

The police department also stressed that accurate information will be released from the police department at the proper time, as information is circulating about the shootings on social media.

Both shootings prompted a UNK Timely Alert email to be sent to students.

Both emails shared the following reminders for how to stay safe:

· Always trust your instincts, and if you feel unsafe in any situation, get to a safe place, and call for help.

· Don’t allow tailgating into residence halls and buildings and keep residence hall doors secured/locked.

· Do not loan out your access cards / keys and / or ID to anyone. If you lose any of these items, report it to the UNKPD and/or applicable authority immediately so that the appropriate safety protocols may be taken.

· Avoid walking alone at night and keep to well-lit routes where possible.

· Stay alert: Be aware of what’s going on around you.

· Be alert when using, or simply carrying your smart phone. If you are not currently using it, keep it secure.

· Avoid displaying and carrying large sums of money and only carry the credit / debit card that you need and currently use.

UPDATE: In an email sent to campus Monday from Todd Gottula, Chief Communications and Marketing officer, there have been no arrests made.

Additionally, If you are uncomfortable walking on campus, contact UNK PD at 308-865-8911, and a Police Officer or Community Service Officer will escort you up to two blocks off campus.
