Water has returned to the Kearney Canal that runs through the UNK campus.
Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) had water flowing through the canal on Wednesday. The canal usually sees water return annually in mid-April, when average temperatures warm up so freezing isn’t a concern.
The canal also feeds into the 1-megawatt Kearney Hydro facility, which is just north of campus.
The canal is emptied annually before winter for NPPD crews to conduct maintenance activities. This year, it is tentatively planned to drain the canal in September.
